Concentrates | Starter kit & Equipment | ADDITIVES | Grains, Hops & Yeast | Draught systems ADDITIVES (BEER) An additive is any chemical, natural or synthetic, deliberately added to beer in the course of production, packaging or storing for a specific reason. The most commonly used are adjuncts, finings, heading compounds and water treatment additives. An ADJUNCT is any substitute unmalted cereal grain or fermentable ingredient added to the mash. The purpose can be to: reduce costs by producing more, usually cheaper, fermentable sugars and/or to produce paler, lighter-bodied and less malty beers and/or to produce specialty beers and/or to correct the composition of the extract. FININGS are various organic or mineral substances used to ensure a clear beer by causing impurities, yeast cells and other suspended matter to coagulate and precipitate to the bottom of the fermentation container. Finings available:
A HEADING COMPOUND is an additive used to ensure a firm, long-lasting head or to increase its thickness. Heading compounds available:
WATER TREATMENT is altering the characteristics and composition of water by mechanical or chemical means. In homebrewing, hard water is softened by boiling for about 20 minutes and racking, and soft water is hardened by the addition of calcium sulfate and magnesium sulfate.
